Red Earth Revisited
READ OUR REVIEWS
A migratory stork is one of the narrators in this vibrant revisiting of the story to determine if she really was the cause of the disaster that ensued. Audiences will be fascinated to discover if a bird with homes in both hemispheres is able to offer insight.
The production features powerful performances from highly experienced and skilled performers and puppeteers: Macebo Mavuso, Anele Matoti (in SA Thami Mbongo) and Roshina Ratnam.
They are supported by an exciting ensemble of young and talented performers, including Sisipho Mbopa, Sabelo Khosa, Xolela Tsili from South Africa and from the Netherlands, Nancy Masaba and Sheralynn Adriaansz.
Macebo Mavuso is a theatre, film and television actor, puppeteer, voiceover artist and director from South Africa. In 2006 the famous Dutch puppet theatre company, Speeltheater Holland Studio, led by the husband and wife team, Onny Huisink and Saskia Janse, met Macebo Mavuso in the Netherlands.
This resulted in their first collaboration ‘Red Earth’, a small production with two actors. At that time Mavuso came up with the idea to tell the true story of Nongqawuse and the Great Cattle Killing, because his goal is to find exciting ways to tell people in South Africa their own stories.
In 2011 they all met Yvette Hardie and so the collaboration started with Assitej South Africa to create a more ambitious production with Mavuso called ‘Red Earth Revisited’.
Drawing on actors from South Africa and the Netherlands, ‘Red Earth Revisited’ is a lively and engaging piece of visual storytelling featuring magical puppetry and song.
The innovative sets and puppets have been devised for the production by Onny Huisink in collaboration with the renowned Keiskamma Art Project from Hamburg, Eastern Cape.
