STEEN PAPIER SCHAAR 5+

(ROCK PAPER SCISSORS)

Based on the script Rock Paper Scissors by Corey Madden/Laural Meade.

In coproduction with Oorkaan and Childsplay

'Steen Papier Schaar' is about Ollie and Yuki. Ollie is an old, grumpy man. He likes order and rules and wants everything to go the way things always do. Ollie doesn’t like other people. But that’s okay, because he never sees them anyway. And it is at Ollie’s, of all people, that Yuki drops in one day.

Yuki is a boisterous, fast boy. Yuki never sees other people, either. That’s to say, not in real life. Because all he sees is his cell phone, computer screen or video games. When these two completely opposite people meet, it results in a hysterical confrontation. They forget their usual daily activities and discover what they had forgotten long ago: their own power of imagination and creativeness.

And then there is Ralph Rousseau with his instrument, the viola da gamba. He sees and hears everything and  responds to what’s happening. He steers, he swings, he squeezes, he sweeps and he moves.

'Steen Papier Schaar' is theatrical adventure with no words with movement and music and a lot of paper. The special thing about this performance is that everything is made out of paper. The set, the puppets and the props. Paper is molded, cut, torn, bent, teased, hit, stroked and played with. Not only does the paper help Ollie and Yuki to discover their own power of imagination, it eventually helps them tell and create a story.

The performance is a co-production with Oorkaan, the new Productiehuis Jeugdconcerten in Amsterdam. Additionally, there is a collaboration with Childsplay from Tempe, Arizona. Two ‘fysical comedy’ actors, Jon Gentry and David Dickinson, will be coming to the Netherlands especially for the performance. Speeltheater Holland will also be working with the musician  Ralph Rousseau, ambassador of the viola da gamba and winner of the Edison Classical Public Award 2009. In this performance, Ralph draws on all the possibilities of this unique instrument to tell the story of the two characters.  The fact that the performance ‘Rock-Paper-Scissors ‘ is made without words makes it extremely suitable for non-Dutch-language audiences.
